Flight

Flight was made in response to a flight I took January 15, 2007 from Los Angeles, California to St Louis, Missouri. In October 2006 I had driven from Kansas City to San Francisco, going through Bakersfield just east of LA in southern California before heading north. On the flight that January, the plane stayed at a low altitude and I saw, and photographed, many of the places we had visited enroute or that I had noted on the map as we drove. The skies were clear until we reached Missouri. I had looked straight down Death Valley, noted Lake Mead, and could see Capitol Reef and the Grand Canyon before seeing the geologic formations of the plains, the circular marks of center pivot irrigation and the Jeffersonian grid of Kansas. Flight is a photographic record of the trip, and a reflection on its cost.
